What research says
Studies in people
-
Benefit
Iodine deficiency progress3
In some countries, more dietary salt was adequately iodised, and many reached or neared eliminating iodine deficiency.
-
Open question
Iodine levels in pregnancy4
In pregnant women in Turkey, iodised salt use was common but many still had low iodine levels.
Study type not stated
-
Open question
Child growth5
Scientists do not yet know whether iodised salt helps children grow, as no review has pulled the evidence together.
How it’s made and used
-
Iodine in cooking6
In bouillon sold in Senegal, iodised salt kept most of its iodine after six months and after cooking in broth or rice.
The signal at the top counts the findings in people and in animal and lab studies. A concern in studies of people outranks animal and lab studies, and “No concerns” needs at least two findings in people. Findings whose study type is not stated are shown but not counted. This page is a reference, not medical advice. It describes what regulators and published research say. Talk to a doctor or dietitian about your own diet.
