What research says

Studies in people

  • Open question

    Vitamin A levels in children3

In some Zambian children, turning orange during mango season happened when liver vitamin A stores were high.

  • Benefit

    Diet quality and weight4

People who ate mango had better diets, and teen boys and adult men who ate mango weighed less.

  • Benefit

    Blood sugar control5

In people with extra weight, eating mango daily for four weeks lowered fasting insulin and improved insulin sensitivity.

  • Open question

    Facial wrinkles in older women7

In fair-skinned postmenopausal women, 85 g of mango daily reduced wrinkles, while 250 g increased them.

  • Benefit

    Muscle soreness after training9

In Thai male beach volleyball players, mango puree during training was linked to lower inflammation and muscle damage markers than a placebo.

Animal and lab studies only

  • Open question

    Gut bacteria balance14

In lab studies, mango fiber from mango bars helped gut bacteria grow, but we do not know if this happens in people.

Study type not stated

Allergies and intolerances

These are about people with an allergy, an intolerance or coeliac disease. The signal is about the ingredient itself, and these are about the person eating it, so the signal does not count them.

How it’s made and used

  • How the body absorbs nutrients6

In people, mango phenolics were absorbed from both flesh and juice, with juice giving higher chlorogenic acid absorption.

The signal at the top counts the findings in people and in animal and lab studies. A concern in studies of people outranks animal and lab studies, and “No concerns” needs at least one finding in people. When most findings in people point one way, the page leans that way (“Mostly”), and every finding is still shown. Findings whose study type is not stated are shown but not counted. This page is a reference, not medical advice. It describes what regulators and published research say. Talk to a doctor or dietitian about your own diet.
