What research says

Studies in people

  • Benefit

    Blood vessel health in teens2

In overweight teen boys, strawberry powder raised blood nitrate levels and improved blood vessel function in some.

Animal and lab studies only

  • Benefit

    Blood vessel inflammation7

In animal studies, strawberries helped blood vessel inflammation, but antibiotics blocked this, so gut bacteria seem needed.

Study type not stated

  • Concern

    Allergy and kidney stones3

Strawberries contain oxalates and compounds that can cause allergies.

  • Benefit

    Oxidative stress and disease4

Strawberry is rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, which studies suggest may help lower oxidative stress in the body.

  • Concern

    Pesticide residues in fruit5

About a quarter of strawberry samples tested in Beijing contained pesticide residues, and a few were above China's limit.

  • Open question

    Antioxidants from fruit6

Strawberry seeds make up a small part of the fruit but hold most of its antioxidants.

The signal at the top counts the findings in people and in animal and lab studies. A concern in studies of people outranks animal and lab studies, and “No concerns” needs at least two findings in people. Findings whose study type is not stated are shown but not counted.
