Phthalates in Chinese vegetable oils and reproductive health risk

What it found

Two common phthalates were found in four types of edible vegetable oil sold in China, and the authors estimate the reproductive health risk to people who eat them is relatively small.

What they found

Phthalates detected

Both DEHP and DBP were found in all four types of edible vegetable oil. DBP had the highest detection rate at 13.48%, followed by DEHP at 7.78%.

Risk estimate

The hazard indices for the two phthalates were less than 1 in the oils, except for soybean oil.

Soybean oil detection

Soybean oil had the lowest detection rates for both phthalates: 1.94% for DEHP and 5.16% for DBP.

Soil contamination link

In China, phthalate contamination in soils where oil crops are grown strongly influences the phthalate levels in edible vegetable oils.

What the authors conclude

“The phthalates in edible vegetable oils pose a relatively small reproductive health risk to Chinese residents.”
Xiang W, Gong Q, Xu J, et al, 2020

Also in their conclusions

  • They recommend that Chinese residents who consume soybean oil choose well-known brands and regularly change the brand they use.
  • They say the phthalates in edible vegetable oils pose a relatively small reproductive health risk to Chinese residents.

How it was done

Phthalates are widely used in industry and are of international concern because of their reproductive toxicity. Chinese residents are often exposed to phthalates through edible vegetable oil.

The researchers tested 1016 samples of four major edible vegetable oils from across China: an edible oil blend, soybean oil, peanut oil and rapeseed oil. They measured levels of two phthalates, DEHP and DBP, and estimated the cumulative reproductive health risk for Chinese residents from these oils.

What it can’t tell you

  • We summarised it from the abstract only.
  • This study measured phthalate levels in oil samples and estimated risk. It did not follow people over time to see whether eating these oils affected their reproductive health.
